Ref2Model

Ref2Model is an mdl application for MicroStation^® designed to package a drawing and all its various reference files into a single DGN file.

The traditional method, using 'Merge Into Master', suffers from the problem that the various components can never be separated again, losing track of which element came from where.

Now with Ref2Model you can automatically compile the master file and all its reference files into separate models in a new DGN. The result being a single DGN file that retains all the flexibility of your original drawing.

Ref2Model has the following enhancements and options:

Handles a mixture of 2d and 3d files
Preserves the symbology and colours in the reference files
Preserves clipping and masking
Optionally clips each reference file to its clipping shape when
copying into a model so that only the visible information is copied
Can define a list of reference-file-names, such as
border files, to exclude from the process
Runs in batch mode, reading parameters from a config file
Optionally includes nested references ("Copy Attachments")
Optionally creates a log file
Optionally clips all the merged references to an edge defined by a shape in the master file
Optionally runs in interactive mode so these options can be set in a dialog

Ref2Model is an ideal solution for intermediate "snapshots" of a project's progress as it provides all the relevant data in a single package, while not disrupting the current drafting environment. It is aso ideal for entering drawings into a document management system, avoiding the perennial problems of hard-coded reference paths and unexpected changes in the drawing thanks to untracked alterations to the reference file.
